10+ Best WordPress Themes

Choosing a theme is one of the few website decisions that is hard to undo cheaply. Posts and pages survive a theme change; menus, widgets, homepage sections and design settings mostly do not. So it is worth taking time over, and worth being clear about what you need before you look at demos.

This list is organised by the kind of site you are building. Our own pro themes come first, and we say so plainly: they are how we fund the free versions. The free themes from WordPress.org that follow are strong alternatives, listed without affiliation, and for many sites they are all you need. Switching to a well-fitted theme can make a visible difference to how a site performs; one Casino Website we have seen is an example of a content-heavy site that improved after a move to a leaner design.

When a pro theme is worth paying for

  • You need a specific layout the free version does not have. Extra homepage sections, alternative headers, more footer arrangements.
  • You want support. Pro licences include help from the people who wrote the theme.
  • Design control matters. Finer typography, colour and spacing options without writing CSS.
  • The site earns money. A modest annual cost is small against the value of a site that converts.

If none of those applies yet, start with the free version. Every Canyon pro theme below has a free counterpart, and the free WordPress.org themes at the end are genuinely usable without an upgrade.

Our pro themes (Canyon Themes)

Full disclosure: the first nine themes are ours. The free versions are reviewed by the wordpress.org theme team; the pro versions add layouts, options and support. All are maintained for current WordPress and PHP and use the Customizer for design with the block editor for content.

How to decide

Match the theme to the site type first: medical, finance, business, blog, magazine or education. Then install the free version on a staging site and load real content into it. If you find yourself wanting a layout or option the free version does not have, that is the moment to buy the pro; before then, the upgrade is speculative. Whatever you choose, keep content in core blocks rather than theme-specific shortcodes so that a future change is painless.

FAQ

What does a Canyon pro theme add over the free version?
Additional homepage sections, alternative header and footer layouts, finer typography and colour controls, extra widgets and priority support. The free version is a complete theme; the pro removes limits once you hit them.
Can I start free and upgrade later without rebuilding?
Yes. The pro version is the same theme with more options, so your content, menus and most settings carry over. Install the pro, activate it, and review the new options.
Are premium marketplace themes better than these?
Not necessarily. Many bundle page builders and sliders that add weight and licence dependencies. A lean theme with the block editor is easier to maintain and usually faster. Judge by maintenance, speed and fit, not by feature count.
