WordPress powers a large share of the web and remains the most common platform for independent publishing. If you have been writing a blog for a while, you have probably wondered whether it could pay for itself, or more. It can, and the methods are well established; what most people underestimate is the time it takes.
A blog earns in proportion to the audience it has and the trust that audience places in it, and both take months or years to build. The publishers who make a living from WordPress sites generally spent a long time producing useful content before the income became meaningful. Generating Revenue Using Google Adsense
Google AdSense is the simplest starting point. You apply, Google reviews the site for original content and policy compliance, and once approved you add a single script to your header (Site Kit by Google does this for you and also connects Google Analytics 4). AdSense then places ads automatically or in the slots you define.
AdSense now pays publishers per impression rather than per click, so revenue scales with pageviews and with how valuable your audience is to advertisers; finance and software topics pay far more per thousand views than general lifestyle content. Rates for a new blog are low, and ad blockers reduce them further. Once a site passes a sustained traffic threshold, premium networks such as Mediavine, Raptive (formerly AdThrive) or Ezoic typically pay more than AdSense and manage the placements for you; each publishes its own minimum monthly sessions.
Keep ads from hurting the site. Reserve space for ad slots so they do not cause layout shift (a Core Web Vitals problem), avoid ads above the fold on mobile that push content down, and check the engagement rate in GA4 before and after enabling them. A memorable domain name and returning readers matter more than squeezing another ad unit onto the page.
Making Money With Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing means recommending products with tracked links; when a reader clicks and buys, you earn a commission. It suits blogs that already review, compare or teach, because the recommendation sits naturally in the content. Most online retailers and software companies run a programme, either directly or through networks such as Amazon Associates, ShareASale, CJ (Commission Junction), Impact, Awin and PartnerStack.
Only recommend products you would suggest without the commission; readers notice, and a lost reader costs more than a lost sale. Write anchor text that describes the product, keep links in context, and use a link-management plugin such as Pretty Links or ThirstyAffiliates to shorten, group and track links so you can see which convert. Regulators in the US, UK and EU require you to tell readers that links may earn you a commission. A short disclosure line at the top of affiliate posts is standard practice and does not put readers off.
Sponsored Posts & Reviews
Once your blog has a measurable audience, brands will pay to appear in it. A sponsored post is an article written for or about a company in exchange for a fee; a paid review is the same with a product at its centre. Unlike ads, sponsored content is not affected by ad blockers and pays a fixed amount regardless of clicks.
Prepare a one-page media kit: monthly sessions and users from GA4, audience countries and devices, social following, typical engagement and your rates. Publish a “Work with us” page so companies can find you, and approach brands whose products your readers already use. When you accept work, give it the same care as your own posts: a review that is honest about drawbacks builds trust and gets read; an advertorial that reads like a press release does neither. Advertising rules in most countries require paid content to be identifiable as such, so check what applies to you.
Selling Digital Products
If readers already trust your advice, some will pay for a more complete version of it. Digital products, ebooks, templates, presets, spreadsheets, printables, courses, have no shipping and no stock and can be sold indefinitely once made. They do take real time up front, so start with one product that answers the question your readers ask most.
On WordPress the two established options are Easy Digital Downloads, built specifically for files and licences, and WooCommerce with its downloadable-product type, which is the better choice if you may add physical goods later. Both connect to Stripe and PayPal. Selling Ebooks
An ebook is the most accessible digital product for a writer. If you have a long archive, a series of related posts can be edited, updated and expanded into a coherent guide; alternatively, write about the part of your expertise readers keep asking about. Aim for something a reader could not assemble from your free posts in an afternoon.
Write in Google Docs or Word, export to PDF and, if you want to sell on Kindle as well, to EPUB. Design the cover in Canva or Affinity Publisher; a clean typographic cover beats a cluttered one. Live sessions turn readers into a community and pay better per hour than most other formats. A webinar can be a one-off workshop, a monthly Q&A for members or the launch event for a course. Free webinars build an email list; paid ones earn directly.
You do not need dedicated webinar software to start. Sell a ticket as a product in WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads, run the session on Zoom, Google Meet or StreamYard, and email the link to buyers. Plugins such as WebinarPress or WP Event Manager handle registration and reminders inside WordPress if you run events regularly. Record every session; the recording becomes another digital product.

Measure each in GA4, drop what does not work and reinvest time in what does. A blog that keeps publishing useful content and treats its readers well can support its author; it just rarely does so quickly.
